Academic and Professional Goals
My academic goal at Leeward Community College had switched from majoring in business, to education. My new plan here is to graduate with the Associate of Arts in Teaching degree and transfer to UH Manoa by the end of spring in 2012. At Manoa, I plan to acquire my Bachelor’s in Education and I also plan to attend the SATEP for secondary education. If it is possible, I will apply for the Manoa International Exchange program (MIX) so that I can study abroad in Asia while completing Education courses credited at Manoa. Upon receiving my bachelor’s degree at Manoa, I am planning to apply for the Japan Exchange & Teaching program (JET) to continue my career in teaching English as a Second Language in Japan. Putting together this development plan has made my future dreams much clearer. I can see myself working at a high school or college in Japan as an ESL teacher, working with students eager to learn more about English or about American/Hawaiian Culture. Albeit I have a profound love for Japan and it’s culture, my desire to travel doesn’t stop there. Over the course of teaching, I want to travel to other countries such as Korea, Thailand and Vietnam. I also hope to teach in those countries. Although I plan to become a teacher, I will always be a student as well. While teaching English, I aim to form a friendly bond with countries by learning how to speak their language.
I am planning to acquire my Associate of Arts in Teaching Degree at Leeward Community College by the end in Spring of 2012. I continued my enrollment at LCC because it’s prices are much more affordable and it’s also closer to home. I really enjoy working with Leeward’s AAT staff as they are all closely associated, which really helps to keep consistency while taking my Education courses. They are also friendly, giving me a great role model for when I become a teacher one day. During my time at Leeward, I also volunteer at the Learning Resource Center as an English tutor for English Language Institution students. These students are at LCC to begin their academic career in America. I began volunteering in the Spring of 2011 and doing so gives me great exposure to the type of students I’ll be teaching in the future. I meet with these students once a week to engage in English conversation in a casual manner. Being a fellow student helps relieve some of the academic ‘pressure’ that comes with an older teacher, so the students can relax while practicing their new language. After I graduate from LCC, I plan to transfer to the University of Hawai’i at Manoa to receive my Bachelor’s in Education. As a college student, I plan to take advantage of the Manoa International Exchange program, which allows me to study abroad in foreign countries while paying Manoa tuition and taking Manoa courses. This allows me to start putting in the 40 hours of field work that will be required for the State Approved Teacher’s Education Program that I plan to attend at Manoa, while staying on track for graduation.
In the event that I do not qualify for the JET program in Japan, I will apply directly for a public school in Hawaii under the Department of Education. I plan to teach secondary education, so I will apply for a public high school, specializing in teaching English as a Second Language or Digital Media. In order to apply, I will need to complete a state-approved teacher education program (which I will have done at Leeward) and pass the Praxis I test. Once the Office of Human Resources obtains my Application for Professional Employment for Teachers, School Librarians and School Counselors, a personal interview is arranged with an authorized department representative. I will dress appropriately for the interview; wearing a tied collared shirt, clean covered shoes and a pen on my person at all times.
After completing the application process successfully, my name will be added to the Department’s teacher hiring pool. The school principal or designated school representative will interview applicants for the final selection of the vacancy. Some things that the Department assesses are my academic preparations, teaching experience, personal interview results, college transcripts, and geographic and grade level placement preferences.
I would like to teach at Mililani High School because it is my alma mater and I know the campus very well. I want to work primarily with international students. During my time working with international students at Leeward, I’ve concluded that it takes a certain type of courage for someone to come out of their comfortable home country and take on an entirely different world and language. I enjoy working with older students because they tend to be more mature and serious about their education. I want to eventually work my way up to being a college professor so that I can work with college students once again.
Years 2-4: Review of Successful Teaching Strategies.
I have just completed my first year in the school system. I have a good idea of what does and does not work with the grade level of students I’m working with. I also have a better idea of what is considered too hard or too easy of a task I am asking for. I will apply new or different teaching strategies for this year’s students. I would like to start supervising a club at my school to better understand the school system and to see how my students operate in a casual setting outside the classroom. I will still be a professional about everything I do, but I will get to learn what motivates students to do work when I see them in an environment they are comfortable in, where no academic pressure is being applied. Understanding the level of my students in all aspects (physically, mentally and spiritually) molds my strategies in a way that can and will make them grow.
A Teacher Remastered (Years 5+)
By the time I’ve reached the 5-year mark, I hope to have mastered the basics to teaching. I hope I’ve been one more influence for my students to strive only for the highest and to get the most out of life. I hope that as an ESL teacher I’ve fulfilled my personal mission of making a safe, world-friendly environment for them, and have given them someone they can trust and confide in from a land so far away. I hope being a foreigner has opened their minds to what the world has to offer, and hope to spark their curiosity enough to have them expand their own horizons. I hope that I can prove to the world that not all Americans only think of themselves, but are open to new ideas and ways of life. At this point, I wish to return to UH Manoa to work on my Masters in Education Administration. I am a teacher in a few aspects, but still a student in all others. Being a student is my real career.
